Artist Residency at Raven’s Reuseful: Nicole Bauberger

DO I OWE ANYTHING ON IT?

Nicole Bauberger will undertake a project called, “Do I Owe Anything On It?” for her second Residency with Raven Recycling. Last summer Nicole learned about estimated the credit-card sized amount of microplastics we ingest every week. Microplastics are extremely small pieces of plastic debris in the environment resulting from the disposal and breakdown of consumer products and industrial waste. In sharing this news with her partner Dean Eyre, he replied, Is it activated? Do I owe anything on it? These strike Nicole as good questions. Is it activated? What is it doing in there? What do we collectively owe on all this? What will it cost us?

During her residency, Nicole will be inviting the public to create credit-card sized collages using scraps of food packaging plastic and packing tape. She anticipates that this project will create a context for discussions regarding our societal use of plastics and how it is changing our world both inside and out. Nicole will also encourage everyone to take part in drawing outlines of each other’s bodies on cardboard boxes. These outlines will then be installed on the outside of Raven recycling and a credit-card collage sewn inside each one.

With the single-use plastic ban coming into effect, Nicole hopes this project will help us envision the reasons behind it and collectively imagine both how to inhabit the consequences of the plastic-laced world we go on making together and how to change it.
